We concentrate on the conception and design of interactive systems and focus on reducing the complexity of digital appliances to make them self-explaining and easy to use. This helps our clients to improve their products’ handling and thus the products’ entire value.

Customized rather than Ready Made

ma ma Interactive System Design is a design studio situated in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Stefan Karp founded the office in 1999. Having deliberately decided for a lean and thus flexible and efficient structure, ma ma’s teams are created according to the demands of each individual project. Depending on its actual size and demands, two to fifteen experts cover one project. They cooperate with a steady network of external partners who do parts of the projects such as programming or branding strategies with Stefan being the link between client and studio. Having graduated from the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach, Stefan Karp’s approach to interactive system design is rooted in industrial design.

Stefan Karp

Stefan Karp was born in 1963 and has been designing interactive systems since 1992 when people started thinking about “new media”. In 1993 he founded “Real Informationsdesign” with three other partners. He also organized exhibitions, worked with media artists on installations, held lectures and held various teaching positions at different universities. He taught and lectured at the University for applied sciences in Kaiserlautern for the degree program for Virtual Design together with Jochen Denzinger from 2004 to 2005.

ma ma Interactive System Design is specialized in the consulting, conception and design of all different types of interactive systems and digital media, which include first of all: – Automotive appliances such as driver’s assistance systems and navigational systems – Household Appliances – Software applications – Database websites – Research projects

Beyond Usability

Both, usability and aspects of software ergonomics with all their different aspects are the basis for the man-machine interfaces we create and conceptualize. They, however, are not the only aspect we focus on and are thus evaluated anew in the context of each individual application because a highly specialized software application for experts simply has different has different demands than a media installation in an exhibition. We consider technical and functional criteria, esthetic and semantic aspects, as well as organizational points and include them into our design conceptions.

Awards and Patents

The work we have done for our clients has been awarded several times over the years. We were nominated for the Bundespreis Produktdesign (Federal Design Price) and received the Red Dot Design Award, the German Award for Communication Design and the if-Design Award. Design is more about methodological and creative thinking than it is about making things »colourful« and »pretty «. We believe technology research and technological developments improve significantly by deploying a design centered approach from the very beginning.
